Why it works on the fold
Carbon-fibre weave on one side, dark walnut grain on the other, meeting at the crease. Both materials are busy at a small scale, which gives the fold plenty to hide in, and the join reads as a change of material rather than a line. Subtle to the point that at a glance it is simply dark.
