Different wallpaper per screen

A different wallpaper on each screen?

Short answer: not as two separate pictures. iOS takes one wallpaper and cuts every screen from it — but you can still make the cover and the inner display look different.

What iOS actually does

On the iPhone Duo you set one wallpaper. iOS keeps it as a single poster and makes a separate crop for each screen and orientation. We checked this on the iPhone Duo simulator by reading the files iOS writes when a wallpaper is set: one image, three crops.

ScreenWhat it shows
Inner, landscapeThe whole image, crease down the middle
Inner, portraitThe central strip, enlarged about 1.4×
Cover (folded)The same central strip — about 48% of the width, full height

So there is no setting for "this picture outside, that picture inside". Whatever is in the middle of your wallpaper is what the cover shows.

Way 1: compose for the crop

Because the cover only shows the middle, a single image can look like two: one thing in the central strip, something else in the outer quarters that only appears when you open the phone. Unfolded, you see the full scene; folded, you see a close-up of its centre.

Our Two Faces designs split a subject exactly on the hinge, so the cover shows the meeting point of both halves. The simulator and the preview on every design page show the cover crop, so you can see the folded version before you set it.

What a single image cannot do is show the right half on the cover and the whole picture inside — the crop is centred. Some videos show something like that; we have not been able to confirm on the simulator whether the wallpaper editor lets you frame each screen separately, so treat it as unconfirmed.

Way 2: different Lock Screen and Home Screen

The Lock Screen and Home Screen can differ. When you add a wallpaper, choose Customize Home Screen instead of Set as Wallpaper Pair, then pick a blur, a colour or another photo for the Home Screen. Both still apply to both displays, but it is the one "two wallpapers" setting iOS really has.

Way 3: switch wallpapers automatically

None of these split the two screens; they change the one wallpaper both screens share.

What to download

One landscape master per design — 2892 × 2034 on this site. Keep the subject inside the central strip and the cover will show it; see the size guide for the numbers.

Questions

Can I set a different wallpaper on the iPhone Duo cover screen? Not as a separate image. iOS sets one wallpaper and the cover shows its central strip, about 48% of the width at full height. To make the cover look different, put a different subject in the middle of the image than at the sides.
Why does my cover screen show only part of my wallpaper? The cover is a narrow portrait screen. iOS fills its height and centre-crops the width, so a landscape wallpaper loses its outer quarters on the cover.
Can the Lock Screen and Home Screen be different?Yes. Choose Customize Home Screen instead of Set as Wallpaper Pair and pick a blur, colour or another photo. That choice applies to both displays.
Can the wallpaper change when I fold the phone? Not that we have found. You can switch wallpapers with a Focus, Photo Shuffle or a Shortcuts automation, but folding itself does not swap the image.
